In his speech, he referred to the defense of the town of Clydebank in Scotland by the ORP PIORUN and expressed great respect for the Poles for this great achievement during World War II.

A Scot by origin, the Lord Speaker said, among other things:

“We respect Polish citizens who fought for our freedom. We in Clydebank, where there is a monument to Polish sailors, remember their heroic deeds, in particular the merits of the crew of the destroyer ORP “Piorun” … The destruction was enormous, 12 thousand houses were devastated. Poles not only defended us against the Luftwaffe, but they were involved in rebuilding the city and became part of our society”

During the Clydebank Blitz in March 1941, the Polish destroyer ORP Piorun played a significant role in defending the town. While undergoing repairs at John Brown’s shipyard, Piorun used its anti-aircraft guns to engage Luftwaffe bombers attacking Clydebank. This action contributed to the defense efforts and forged a lasting bond between Clyde bank and Poland, commemorated by memorials and annual remembrance services.

The presence of ORP Piorun during the Clydebank Blitz had a significant positive impact on the morale of the local population. As the only military vessel to put up organized resistance against the Luftwaffe attacks, Piorun’s actions were seen as a symbol of solidarity and bravery. This defense effort forged a lasting bond between Clydebank and Poland, commemorated by memorials and annual remembrance services. The courage displayed by Piorun’s crew provided a morale boost to the citizens amidst the devastation, reinforcing their resolve during a challenging time.

7 października 2024 r. Lord Speaker McFall of Alcluith wygłosił niezapomniane przemówienie podczas ceremonii otwarcia wystawy Instytutu Pamięci Narodowej „Szlaki nadziei. Odyseja wolności”. My w Clydebank, gdzie znajduje się pomnik polskich marynarzy, pamiętamy o ich bohaterskich czynach, w szczególności o zasługach załogi niszczyciela ORP „Piorun”… Zniszczenia były ogromne, 12 tysięcy domów zostało zdewastowanych. Polacy nie tylko bronili nas przed Luftwaffe, ale brali udział w odbudowie miasta i stali się częścią naszego społeczeństwa”
