August 20, 1944, went down in the history of the Warsaw Uprising as one of the most celebrated uprising successes. On that day, after heavy and bloody fighting, Home Army units captured the building of the Polish Joint-Stock Telephone Company – the famous PAST building at 39 Zielna Street.

A Fortress in the Center of Warsaw

The towering, eight-story building, dating from 1908, was one of the most important points of German telephone and military communications during the occupation. Manned by a strong garrison armed with machine guns and grenade launchers, the PAST building provided an excellent observation point. From its rooftops and windows, the Germans controlled a significant portion of the city center, and the insurgents repeatedly paid with their blood for attempting to move near it.

Heroes of the Assault

The PAST building was captured by units of the “Kiliński” Battalion, supported by sapper and mine teams. The attack began on the morning of August 20th. The breakthrough came with the use of a fire engine pump pumped with a mixture of flammable fuels. The insurgents set the building on fire, forcing the Germans to abandon their heavily defended positions.

The effect of the action was spectacular: over 30 German soldiers were killed, and 115 were taken prisoner – a significant number given the circumstances of the uprising.

A Symbol of Victory

The capture of the PAST building had enormous significance, not only tactically but also psychologically. The Poles managed to capture one of Warsaw’s tallest buildings – second only to the Prudential in height. In the eyes of the fighters and civilians alike, this success became a symbol of the insurgents’ strength and determination.

The building remained in Polish hands until the end of the uprising, serving as a testament to the courage and ingenuity of the fighting Warsaw residents.

Remembering the Victory

Today, on the anniversary of the capture of the PAST, we remember the heroes of the “Kiliński” Battalion and all the insurgents who, in August 1944, demonstrated that despite hopeless circumstances, spectacular success could be achieved.

Zdobycie PAST-y – jedno z największych zwycięstw Powstania Warszawskiego

20 sierpnia 1944 roku zapisał się w historii Powstania Warszawskiego jako dzień jednego z najgłośniejszych sukcesów powstańczych. Tego dnia, po ciężkich i krwawych walkach, oddziały Armii Krajowej zdobyły budynek Polskiej Akcyjnej Spółki Telefonicznej – słynną PAST-ę przy ul. Zielnej 39.

Twierdza w centrum Warszawy

Wysoki, ośmiopiętrowy gmach z 1908 roku był w czasie okupacji jednym z najważniejszych punktów niemieckiej łączności telefonicznej i wojskowej. Obsadzony przez silny garnizon, uzbrojony w karabiny maszynowe i granatniki, PAST-a stanowiła doskonały punkt obserwacyjny. Z jej dachów i okien Niemcy kontrolowali znaczną część Śródmieścia, a powstańcy wielokrotnie płacili krwią za próby przemieszczania się w jej pobliżu.

Bohaterowie szturmu

Zdobycia PAST-y dokonały oddziały batalionu „Kiliński”, wspierane przez grupy saperskie i minerskie. Atak rozpoczął się 20 sierpnia w godzinach porannych. Przełomem okazało się użycie strażackiej motopompy, do której wtłoczono mieszankę łatwopalnych paliw. Powstańcy podpalili budynek, zmuszając Niemców do opuszczenia silnie bronionych pozycji.

Efekt akcji był spektakularny: zginęło ponad 30 żołnierzy niemieckich, a 115 dostało się do niewoli – co w realiach powstania było liczbą ogromną.

Symbol zwycięstwa

Zdobycie PAST-y miało ogromne znaczenie nie tylko taktyczne, ale także psychologiczne. Polakom udało się zdobyć jeden z najwyższych budynków Warszawy – ustępował wysokością tylko Prudentialowi. W oczach walczących i ludności cywilnej sukces ten urósł do symbolu siły i determinacji powstańców.

Budynek pozostawał w polskich rękach aż do końca powstania, będąc świadectwem odwagi i pomysłowości walczących warszawiaków.

Pamięć o zwycięstwie

Dziś, w rocznicę zdobycia PAST-y, pamiętamy o bohaterach batalionu „Kiliński” i wszystkich powstańcach, którzy w sierpniu 1944 roku pokazali, że mimo beznadziejnej sytuacji można odnieść spektakularny sukces.

Zdobycie PAST-y stało się jednym z najjaśniejszych momentów w dziejach Powstania Warszawskiego – świadectwem niezłomności i ducha walki mieszkańców stolicy.
