„Dzisiaj Auschwitz jest symbolem i niepodważalnym dowodem bestialstwa oraz barbarzyństwa narodowo-socjalistycznej ideologii, która znalazła swój dom w konkretnym państwie – w Niemczech.
Jest jednak także symbolem obojętności: wobec śmierci niewinnych ludzi w ramach akcji eutanazyjnych przed rokiem 1939 i po nim, a także obojętności państw Europy Zachodniej na tragedię, jaka rozgrywała się w okupowanej Polsce w latach 1939–1941”
– podkreślił Prezydent Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej.
Główne obchody rocznicowe, z udziałem Ocalałych z Zagłady, odbyły się w budynku tzw. centralnej sauny na terenie byłego niemieckiego obozu Auschwitz II–Birkenau.
Miejsce to znajduje się w bezpośrednim sąsiedztwie ruin komory gazowej i krematorium IV – przestrzeni, która do dziś pozostaje niemym świadkiem masowej zbrodni.
„Wieczna pamięć ofiarom Holokaustu, Żydom zamordowanym w obozie koncentracyjnym Auschwitz – przedstawicielom jednego narodu, a obywatelom wielu państw, także mojej Ojczyzny, Rzeczypospolitej”
– powiedział Prezydent.
W swoim wystąpieniu zwrócił również uwagę na powojenną odpowiedzialność świata. Jak zaznaczył, jedynie około 15 procent sprawców zbrodni popełnionych w niemieckich obozach koncentracyjnych zostało pociągniętych do odpowiedzialności karnej.
„Przez wiele lat świat odwracał wzrok od tej strasznej tragedii i odpowiedzialności za to, co wydarzyło się w Auschwitz. Pamiętaliśmy o ofiarach, ale zapomnieliśmy o sprawcach”
– mówił.
Prezydent podkreślił, że mimo często przywoływanego argumentu o pokoju po 1945 roku i funkcjonowaniu Organizacji Narodów Zjednoczonych, przez dekady nie doprowadzono do pełnego rozliczenia winnych największych zbrodni XX wieku.
Zaznaczył również, że państwo niemieckie do dziś nie wypłaciło Polsce reparacji za zło i zniszczenia wyrządzone podczas II wojny światowej.
„Tak nie buduje się świata pokoju. Za każdą zbrodnię i każdą wojnę trzeba zapłacić i przeprosić. Dopiero wtedy można mówić o wypełnieniu współczesnego obowiązku moralnego”
– podkreślił.
Podczas uroczystości w miejscach symbolicznych zapalono znicze.
W imieniu Ocalałych Prezydent RP zapalił jeden z nich przed Międzynarodowym Pomnikiem Ofiar Obozu Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Prezydent Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej objął obchody rocznicowe Patronatem Honorowym.
Przypomnijmy, że w 2005 roku Organizacja Narodów Zjednoczonych ustanowiła dzień 27 stycznia Międzynarodowym Dniem Pamięci o Ofiarach Holokaustu.

Auschwitz – a Symbol of Atrocity, Indifference but Unresolved Responsibility.
„Today, Auschwitz stands as a symbol and irrefutable proof of the brutality and barbarism of National Socialist ideology, which found its home in a specific state – Nazi Germany. It is also a symbol of indifference: indifference to the deaths of innocent people murdered under so-called “euthanasia” programmes before and after 1939, and indifference on the part of Western European states to what was happening in occupied Poland in the years 1939–1941”
– emphasised the President of the Republic of Poland.
The main commemorations, attended by Holocaust Survivors, took place in the building known as the “central sauna” on the grounds of the former Auschwitz II–Birkenau camp.
The site is located in the immediate vicinity of the ruins of the gas chamber and Crematorium IV – a place that remains a silent witness to mass murder.
“Eternal memory to the victims of the Holocaust – to the Jews murdered in the Auschwitz concentration camp, members of one nation but citizens of many states, including my own homeland, the Republic of Poland,”
– the President said.
In his address, the President also stressed that the world cannot remain indifferent to what happened after 1945.
He noted that only around 15 per cent of perpetrators from the German concentration camps were ever held accountable for the crimes committed there.
“For many years, the world turned its head away from this terrible tragedy and from responsibility for what happened in Auschwitz. After 1945, we remembered the victims, but we forgot about the perpetrators,”
– he stated.
The President pointed out that, despite frequent references to the absence of another world war after 1945 and the functioning of the United Nations, for decades it was not possible to bring those responsible for the greatest crimes of the twentieth century to full justice.
He also emphasised that the German state has yet to pay reparations to Poland for the destruction and suffering caused by the Second World War.
“This is not how a world of peace is built. Every crime and every war must be accounted for, and must be followed by payment and an apology. Only then can we truly say that we have fulfilled our moral responsibility today,”
– he said.
During the commemorations, candles were lit at key symbolic locations.
On behalf of the Survivors, the President lit one of them in front of the International Memorial to the Victims of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Camp.
The President of the Republic of Poland extended his Honorary Patronage over the anniversary commemorations.
It should be recalled that in 2005, the United Nations designated 27 January as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
