On 19 February, we commemorate a great Pole whose ideas transformed the course of world science.

Nicolaus Copernicus – astronomer, mathematician, physician, economist, and canon of Warmia – stands among the most influential figures in human history.

He was the scholar who dared to challenge the long-standing belief that the Earth was the center of the Universe.

“He stopped the Sun and moved the Earth”.

Copernicus formulated the heliocentric theory, demonstrating that the Earth revolves around the Sun, not the other way around.

This groundbreaking concept initiated what later became known as the Copernican Revolution – one of the most significant intellectual transformations in the history of humankind.

His monumental work, De revolutionibus orbium coelestium, published in 1543 shortly before his death, reshaped astronomy and laid the foundations of modern science.

It paved the way for future scholars such as Galileo Galilei and Johannes Kepler, fundamentally changing humanity’s understanding of its place in the cosmos.

Courage in the Pursuit of Truth

At a time when scientific thought was closely intertwined with long-established philosophical and theological traditions, presenting a heliocentric model required extraordinary intellectual courage. Copernicus did not seek fame; he sought truth.

His theory was the result of years of meticulous observation, mathematical calculation, and profound reflection.

Today, his name symbolizes, Intellectual independence, Courageous and critical thinking as well as Poland’s lasting contribution to global civilization

A Polish Legacy of Global Significance

We proudly remember that it was from Poland that emerged the scholar who changed the way humanity views the Universe. Copernicus’ legacy reminds us that Polish science and culture have long played a meaningful role in shaping European and global thought.

For Polish communities abroad, his life remains a powerful source of inspiration and national pride – a testament to the enduring impact of Polish intellect on the world stage.

Mikołaj Kopernik – uczony, który zmienił świat.

19 lutego wspominamy wielkiego Polaka, którego myśl odmieniła dzieje światowej nauki.

Mikołaj Kopernik – astronom, matematyk, lekarz, ekonomista i kanonik warmiński – należy do grona najwybitniejszych postaci w historii ludzkości.

To właśnie on odważył się zakwestionować obowiązujący od starożytności pogląd, że Ziemia stanowi centrum Wszechświata.

„Wstrzymał Słońce, ruszył Ziemię”

Kopernik sformułował teorię heliocentryczną, według której to Ziemia krąży wokół Słońca, a nie odwrotnie.

Ta idea stała się początkiem tzw. przewrotu kopernikańskiego – jednej z najważniejszych rewolucji intelektualnych w dziejach świata.

Jego przełomowe dzieło – De revolutionibus orbium coelestium – zostało opublikowane w 1543 roku, tuż przed śmiercią uczonego. Księga ta nie tylko zmieniła astronomię, ale wpłynęła na rozwój całej nowożytnej nauki, torując drogę takim badaczom jak Galileusz czy Kepler.

Odwaga myślenia

W czasach, gdy poglądy naukowe były ściśle związane z autorytetem tradycji i interpretacjami teologicznymi, ogłoszenie teorii heliocentrycznej wymagało ogromnej odwagi.

Kopernik nie szukał rozgłosu – szukał prawdy. Jego praca była wynikiem wieloletnich obserwacji, obliczeń i głębokiej refleksji.

Dziś jego nazwisko jest symbolem niezależności intelektualnej. odwagi w myśleniu, polskiego wkładu w rozwój światowej cywilizacji Polski oraz wkładu w historię świata.

Z dumą przypominamy, że to właśnie z Polski wyszedł uczony, który zmienił sposób, w jaki ludzkość patrzy na swoje miejsce we Wszechświecie.

Dziedzictwo Kopernika pokazuje, że polska myśl naukowa od wieków wnosiła istotny wkład w rozwój Europy i świata.

Dla środowisk polonijnych postać Kopernika pozostaje szczególnym powodem do dumy – jest dowodem na to, że polska kultura, nauka i duch poszukiwania prawdy mają wymiar uniwersalny.
