The Augustów Roundup was the largest crime committed against the Polish people after the end of the Second World War.

In July 1945, units of the Soviet Red Army and the NKVD, supported by the communist Polish People’s Army, the Security Office (UB), and the Citizens’ Militia (MO), carried out a large-scale operation in the Augustów Forest and surrounding areas. Its aim was to eliminate the Polish anti-communist independence resistance and terrorise the local population of north-eastern Poland.

More than 7,000 people were arrested. Around 600 men and women disappeared and were murdered, their bodies never returned to their families. To this day, the burial places of most of the victims remain unknown.

On this day, the façade of the Presidential Palace in Warsaw was illuminated in tribute to the victims of this tragic chapter in Poland’s history.

We remember. We honour the victims. We continue to seek truth and justice.
