Polish Sue Association expresses its deep concern and outrage at today’s developments surrounding Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal.
The events unfolding today raise serious questions about the constitutional order, the independence of state institutions and respect for the rule of law.
We are deeply concerned by the manner in which this situation has developed. Actions involving one of the country’s most important constitutional institutions must always be conducted on a clear legal basis, with full transparency and respect for constitutional procedures.
Such developments bring back painful historical associations. Poland has experienced periods when the independence of its institutions and the rights of its citizens were severely undermined. We must never allow respect for the Constitution and the rule of law to become secondary to political interests.
Polish Sue Association is a non-partisan organisation. Our commitment is to Poland, its Constitution, democratic principles and the rights of its citizens.
We believe that:
- The Constitution must be respected by every public authority.
- The independence of constitutional institutions must be protected.
- Every action undertaken by state authorities must have a clear legal basis.
- Citizens have the right to peaceful protest and freedom of expression.
- Political disagreements must never lead to intimidation, violence or the restriction of civil liberties.
We most welcome the presence of President of the Republic of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, who is returning from his scheduled trip as emergency with connection with today’s developments and hope that his involvement will contribute to dialogue, respect for constitutional principles and a thorough clarification of the situation.
We call upon the Polish Government and all public authorities to exercise restraint, act transparently and respect the constitutional framework of the Republic of Poland.
The Constitution must stand above political interests. The rule of law must apply equally to everyone, regardless of who holds power.
Poland is our homeland, wherever in the world we may live. Its constitutional integrity and democratic future matter to all Poles, including the Polish diaspora.
Polish Sue Association stands ready to support peaceful, lawful and democratic efforts to defend constitutional principles and the rule of law.
The Constitution and the rule of law should unite Poles, not divide them.
